When NOT Doing Your To Do List Is A Good Idea

(The above picture is a picture of my pregnant brain a few days before Lyla was born. I was definitely in the nesting phase.)

I don't know about you but I'm a list person. I like making plans, writing to do lists, and planning schedules. I usually wake up with an agenda and plan for my day. Last week I realized, however, that sometimes NOT finishing your to do list is a good idea.

On Wednesday last week my plan was to clean my house. I wanted to clean the bathrooms, vacuum and mop the floors, and organize some things. I thought not having a clean house was what was stressing me out. However, what I realized is that although my not clean house was one thing that was bothering me, the bigger thing that was stressing me out was not having my schedule and life in order. I made the decision to delay cleaning my house for another day and sat down at my desk and thought about what was going on the next few weeks, what I needed to say yes to and more importantly what I needed to say no to. I took some time to think through my meal plans, pay some bills, organize my desk, and think about what things really needed to be done first. Cleaning my house was not one of those things. And you know what....after an hour or so of taking some time to look at the bigger picture I felt so much better. I felt more on top of my life, had a clearer plan of what really needed to be done, and was suddenly O.K. that I needed to wait a few days to clean my house.

How about you? What things on your to do list do you need to delay in order to create more peace in your heart and home?
